Stories of the Digital Farm
Stories of the Digital Farm is a compilation of design fictions and proposals that explore the societal implications of digital agriculture. The project brings together agrifood studies and speculative design to examine current data-driven visions of digital agriculture, where assemblages of technologies such as satellites, sensors, robots, and data clouds are presented as a solution to enhance productivity, reduce waste and allow new forms of accountability amongst farms stakeholders. Our team sought to counter the often utopian accounts from industry with a series of design fictions and proposals that suggest the complicated – and sometimes troubling – impacts that the move towards digital agriculture might have on farmers, communities, and wider society.
The Stories of the Digital Farm project was developed in collaboration with the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University.
